New Delhi: The sanctions from the West has engulfed Russia from all ends. Following the  invasion of Ukraine by Russia, all avenues which can pertain to the provision economical support to Moscow has been severely curtailed.

However, the sanctions do not hold on the avenues of international space programs as of now and Moscow is working with other nations of West in the International Space Station (ISS).

Washington extend ops of ISS, Moscow to withdraw

Recently, the United States has extended its operations of the International Space Station until 2030. On the other hand the current decision by Moscow holds the program accessible till 2024.

The head of Roscosmos, Yuri Borisov, said that Russia will withdraw from the International Space Station (ISS) project after 2024. Reason being the deployment of a national orbital station which will begin by then.

We will fulfil our obligations…

“You know that we are working within the framework of international cooperation on the International Space Station. Of course, we will fulfill all our obligations to our partners, but the decision and withdrawal from this station after 2024 have been made, “said Mr. Borisov at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin as reported by Interfax.

According to him, by 2024, Russia will begin to form its own orbital station. He added that the future of astronautics should be based on a systematic scientific program, each flight should “enrich the country with knowledge in the field of space.”

Decision of withdraw was made “even earlier”

Later, the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov explained to TASS that the decision to withdraw Russia from the ISS was made “even earlier”.

Roscosmos to create indigenous space station

On the ISS, Russia owns six modules with ships docked to them. Russia accounts for 17% of the total mass of the ISS. In April, the former head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, reported that Russia would continue to work on the ISS until 2024 – until the end of the station’s service life.

According to him, further decisions on the fate of the Russian segment of the ISS “will depend on the situation.” Roscosmos admitted that they would create their own station in Earth orbit.
