New Delhi: Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa left Singapore on Thursday. This comes after his social travel pass expired, the city-state’s immigration office said, as per the AFP news agency. According to sources, Thailand could now be Rajapaksa’s second Southeast Asian country. He will take temporary shelter after escaping from Sri Lanka. He had earlier also stayed in Maldives.

Can stay in Thailand in for 90 days

Earlier, reports came from Thailand where the former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was seeking asylum. Rajpaksa clarified that he was asking to stay but he was not seeking asylum. Thailand’s spokesman further said that there is no problem with Rajapaksa’s entry on a diplomatic passport. He can stay as a diplomat for 90 days.

Rajpaksa resigned as the President of Sri Lanka

Significantly, the former President was issued a 14-day travel pass on his arrival at Changi Airport in Singapore from Maldives last month. He was allowed to stay there for two weeks. Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abhayawardene announced Rajapaksa’s official resignation on 15 July.

Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the President of Sri Lanka before Chief Justice Jayanta Jayasuriya in Parliament on 21 July following the resignation of Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
