New Delhi: The Calcutta High Court Wednesday directed a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into incidents of violence that erupted over filing of nominations for West Bengal Panchayat polls.

Justice Amrita Sinha passed the directives asking the CBI to provide a brief report of the investigation by July 7. It is worth noting that a day after that (on July 8), there is voting scheduled for the panchayat elections.

The court was hearing a case related to names of those candidates who were participating in the election were vanished. The justice expressed concerns over number of incident of violence being reported within the state.

Following the hearing, the bench noted that the panchayat polls may defer in view of the violence.

So much violence in panchayat polls. The poll should be stopped if the bloodbath continues,” Justice Sinha said.

“So much violence in one Panchayat poll. So much disorder. So many clashes. This is a shame for a state. Why is there so much disorder? What is the State Election Commission doing?” Justice Sinha asked.

After candidates filed their nominations, there were an extensive number of violent incident reported in North Dinajpur, Murshidabad, and Bhangar in the South 24 Parganas.
