What Did The Meghalaya Police Do?

Police took into custody Shanborlang Shati and Mesadapbor Skhembil, who are members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), for their involvement in the killing of two men in Ichamati last week following a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. The authorities presented the two men in court and remanded them to seven days of police custody.

The bodies of Ishan Singh and Sujit Dutta, discovered near the Bangladesh border and approximately 80 km from Meghalaya’s capital Shillong, have not yet been confirmed by the police to be related to the protest.

The KSU led a protest at Sohra police station with a crowd of 300 people, demanding that authorities not treat their cadre as “hunted militants.” During the unrest, unidentified individuals threw a petrol bomb at Shillong’s Malwai police station, resulting in the burning of a police vehicle, according to Rituraj Ravi, the East Khasi Hills District police chief. The police made the arrests based on strong evidence, according to Ravi. He added that the protesters were objecting to the arrests, but authorities clarified that they were investigating the two murders and will follow legal procedures.

Members of Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) wrote to President Draupadi Murmu regarding the March 27 killings, alleging that the murders serve as a “stark reminder of the reign of terror against the non-tribal communities residing in Meghalaya.”

“The letter states that unknown miscreants brutally murdered two innocent Hindus (Ishan Singh & Sujit Dutta) in Ichamati, a village in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, after an anti-CAA rally organized by a pressure group. The media widely reported this incident,” the statement reads.
