Pager blast, walkie-talkie blast and then Israel’s deadly strike over Hezbollah bases that destroyed up to 1,000 rocket launcher barrels of the military group in Lebanon has stirred one subject and that is Mossad. Known as one of the top security agencies, Mossad, the national security agency of Israel has proved yet again that they’re unbeatable.
Israel created shell companies for pagers?
Initially what was taken as the rigging of pagers by Israeli forces in the process of manufacturing has now been considered as something even bigger. The latest reports suggest that Israel might have created shell companies that manufactured those explosive pagers. Mind-blowing is another word for Mossad.
Not just today, Mossad has always been unbelievable when it comes to intelligence, reach and execution. In the 1960s when Israel was engaged in a war against Syria, an Israeli agent who worked for Mossad changed the game. Not only did he pass all the pieces of information to his country but also flourished in the enemy country as a business tycoon and was set to become the president of the state.
Eli Cohen and his passion for Mossad
Eliyahu Ben-Shaul Cohen also known as Eli Cohen was an Egypt-born Israeli spy who worked for Mossad. The story of his contribution to the 1967 war between Syria and Israel is spine-chilling. Eli Cohen was recruited by the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) in 1957 and was placed in military intelligence (MI) where he worked as a counter-intelligence analyst and a translator.
Bored from his then-assigned role, Eli aspired to join Mossad but was rejected twice and he offendedly resigned from his post of counter-intelligence analyst. Two years after his resignation, he was called by Mossad when the director of the intelligence agency was looking for an intelligence officer to infiltrate the Syrian government and went through the file of rejected candidates after none of the current officials were found suitable.
Mossad agent in Syria
After a six-month extensive training course at the Mossad Training School, he was given the invitro identity of a Syrian business tycoon who was returning to his motherland after spending years in Argentina. He was moved to Buenos Aires in 1961 from where he arrived in Damascus in February 1962 as Kamel Amin Thabet. Mossad carefully planned his moves to come in contact with Syrian politicians, public figures, and high-ranking officials to inject him into the Syrian government before he actually entered Syria.
Due to his close contacts with the politicians, it became very easy for him to access political and administrative information when he moved to Syria. He provided a wide range of extremely confidential intelligence data to the Israeli army between 1961 and 1965. His most remarkable achievement was the tour of Golan Heights in which he collected secret information of Syrian intelligence for his own country.
Proposed to be Defence Minister
It is said that he used his close connections with Amin Al-Hafez who became the president of Syria, Eli Cohen penetrated into the military area of Golan Heights and inspected their armaments and other tactics they used against Israel. In the guise of empathy for the soldiers who stand in the sun, he got trees planted for shade that afterward became landmarks for the Israeli military forces to attack.
Amin Al-Hafez proposed his name for the post of Defence Minister. He even said that there could be no better option than him for the next president of Syria.
