Nashik water crises

Nashik: In a video people of Gangodbari village in Nashik can be seen fetching water from a 70 feet well every day for their needs and risking their lives because of water crises.

The water problem in Maharashtra’s Nashik and Peth districts is worsening as temperatures rise. The women of Gangodbari village use a rope to descend into the well to fill their water pots.

Mohan Gawli, Sarpunch of Gangodwari village said, “In our village, this water crisis is going on for the last 10 years almost…women put their lives in danger and enter into this well, there is always the fear of falling. They (women) at times come during the night also.”

He added that one of the wells here has become unfit for usage due to rocks that have fallen into it. Women often come to the second well at night as well, and this new well is about 3 kilometres distant from the hamlet, and without sufficient lighting and other facilities, there is always the possibility of being bitten by snakes or scorpions.

When asked what the authorities are doing to address the local water situation, Gawli stated that Zilla Parishad contractors claim that the amount provided under the Central Jal Jeevan Mission initiative is insufficient. Despite the fact that the budget is for two villages, we are told that it is only enough for one and that we must make do with whatever we can receive.
