New Delhi: In a significant boost to the Atmanirbhar Bharat programme and its climate change goals, India received its first indigenously built hydrogen fuel cell bus on Sunday, developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and private firm KPIT Limited. The bus was on display in Pune after being unveiled by Union Minister Jitendra Singh.

The fuel cell bus may be the most environmentally friendly mode of transportation because it uses hydrogen and air to generate electricity to power the vehicle and produces only water as waste. For contrast, there are over a million diesel buses operating on long distance routes in India, and each one emits an average of 100 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Additionally, fuel cell vehicles emit no greenhouse gases.

PM Narendra Modi’s hydrogen vision is crucial for India to provide Atmanirbhar means of affordable and accessible clean energy, fulfilling climate change goals, and creating new entrepreneurs and employment, according to Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Singh.

It is worth stating here that the operational cost of hydrogen fuel cell trucks is lower than ones run on diesel and this could bring about a freight revolution in the country. “About 12-14 per cent of CO2 emissions come from diesel powered heavy vehicles. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles provide excellent means to eliminate on-road emissions in this sector,” he noted.

Singh concluded that by achieving these objectives, India can transition from being a net importer of fossil fuels to a net exporter of clean hydrogen energy, giving India global leadership in the hydrogen industry by growing into a significant producer of green hydrogen and a supplier of equipment for green hydrogen.
