TMC leader Mahua Moitra has sought an urgent hearing in the Supreme Court regarding her expulsion from the Lok Sabha in a cash-for-query case. The plea was mentioned before a bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, who advised presenting the plea to the Chief Justice of India due to his impending retirement on December 25.

Moitra approached the top court challenging her removal from the Lok Sabha, following her expulsion last Friday after a discussion on the Ethics Committee’s report on the ‘cash-for-query’ issue.

During the House discussion, Moitra was not permitted to speak, and she criticized the Ethics Committee, alleging a disregard for procedural rules. She contested the findings, arguing that they were based on contradictory testimonies from two private individuals, one of whom she identified as her estranged partner masquerading as a common citizen. Moitra emphasized being denied the opportunity to cross-examine them, claiming a breach of her rights.

The Ethics Committee’s report recommended her expulsion and urged an intense, time-bound investigation by the central government. Adopted by a 6:4 majority in the panel, the report highlighted Moitra’s multiple visits to the UAE between 2019 and 2023, despite her absence, noting several logins during these periods.
