Mohan Yadav, the newly appointed Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh hailing from Ujjain, faces a unique dilemma upon assuming office. Ujjain, known as the city of Mahakal, holds a tradition that no one can reign as a king within its boundaries, for the city is under the rule of Lord Mahadev himself. Consequently, no VVIP or prominent figure can reside within its precincts overnight, lest they risk facing unforeseen circumstances.

In light of this tradition, the priests of Ujjain propose that Mohan Yadav may reside within the city as a son, rather than in his capacity as CM. This implies that he may need to forgo VVIP privileges for a day. As Mahakal reigns as the king of Ujjain, no other ruler is permitted to establish residence here.

Constructing a residence beyond the city limits is a common practice in Ujjain’s history. It’s believed that any ruler who stayed within the city limits met an untimely demise. This convention was initiated by King Vikramaditya, who established a tradition of keeping the rulers away from the city, a practice observed to this day. Notably, the Scindia family has a residence approximately 15 kilometers away from Ujjain.

Staying overnight in Ujjain holds a perceived risk, often linked to a downfall in power. Legends circulate around the adverse effects of spending the night in the city. Former Prime Minister Morarji Desai’s government reportedly faced a decline the day after his visit to Mahakal. A similar tale surrounds Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, who purportedly spent a night in Ujjain and resigned within a mere 20 days thereafter.
