Tata Group’s Air India Express has promptly dismissed senior cabin crew members who took mass sick leave without prior notice, causing the cancellation of over 100 flights since Tuesday night and affecting around 15,000 passengers.

In an email sent to the affected crew members, the airline stated that the actions of the crew indicated a deliberate and coordinated decision to abstain from work without valid justification.

The airline emphasized that the mass sick leave not only contravened relevant laws but also breached the Air India Express Limited Employees’ Service Rules applicable to the crew members involved. The statement mentioned that the crew members were scheduled for a flight on Tuesday. However, they notified the Scheduling team at the eleventh hour that they were unwell and consequently reported sick.

The statement mentioned that the crew members were scheduled for a flight on Tuesday. However, they notified the Scheduling team at the eleventh hour that they were unwell and consequently reported sick.

Air India Express CEO Aloke Singh stated that over 100 cabin crew members had reported sick shortly before their scheduled flight duties since Tuesday night.

It’s worth noting that Air India Express and AIX Connect (formerly AirAsia India), both subsidiaries of the Tata Group-owned Air India, are undergoing a merger to establish a unified low-cost airline. However, sources familiar with the matter suggest that cabin crew members of Air India Express are protesting against what they perceive as “inequality” in their treatment compared to their counterparts at AIX Connect.
