Syncopation, a trailblazing Indian contemporary jazz and funk band led by virtuoso guitarist and composer Risshi S Sachdeva, has been making waves in the music scene since its inception in 2009. With a fusion of modern jazz, funk, swing, and bebop, the band’s unique sound captivates audiences with soulful melodies, modern grooves, and frenzied improvisations.
Risshi S Sachdeva, fueled by a deep passion for jazz and a desire to create innovative music, formed the band as a trio after completing his music studies in Melbourne, Australia. He handpicked a group of exceptionally talented musicians who shared his vision, including drummer Joshua Grant and bassist Brenen Denfer. Over the years, the band’s lineup has evolved, but the core essence of their music remains constant.
Syncopation’s second lineup, featuring Nikhil Vasudevan on drums and Sahil Warsi on acoustic bass, played together from 2010 until 2013. Warsi’s departure to pursue music studies at Berklee College of Music led to a brief replacement by Shashank Das on acoustic bass, followed by the arrival of virtuoso bass player Sonic Shori, who became an active member of the group.
The current lineup of Syncopation comprises Risshi S Sachdeva on guitars, Nikhil Vasudevan on drums, Sonic Shori on electric bass, Vatsal Bakhda on keys, Aniket Chaturvedi on tenor saxophone, and Abhay Sharma on alto saxophone.
Recognized as one of the most prominent jazz band in India, Syncopation has performed over a thousand concerts, captivating audiences with their soulful and energetic performances. In 2013, they released their highly acclaimed debut album titled “TUNE IN,” which was hailed as an Indian jazz masterpiece. The album pushed the boundaries of the genre and showcased the band’s growth as musicians and composers, featuring six incredibly written original compositions.
Further cementing their place in the modern jazz scene, Syncopation released the single “Rishikesh” in February 2020, during the COVID-19 period. The song received immense praise from fans and critics alike and became a hit in jazz circles. Their music continues to be unique and forward-pushing, inspiring artists and fans globally.
Syncopation’s talent has earned them the opportunity to perform for prestigious brands such as Rolex, Audi, Honda, Google, Coca Cola, and many others. They have also headlined renowned jazz music festivals like Jazz India Circuit Fest, Area 79 Music Fest, Open Hand Jazz Festival, and Calcutta Jazz Fest, among many others.
Currently, the band is working on their highly anticipated new album titled “The Indian Sky,” set for release in 2023. With six tunes that are expected to captivate their global fanbase, the band’s latest offering is sure to satisfy the cravings of jazz enthusiasts worldwide.
