During the ongoing preparations for the grand ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony of the Ram Mandir scheduled for January 22, political debates about the sacred inauguration persist. Congress member Udit Raj has joined the chorus of disapproval, echoing criticisms from leaders within the INDI alliance. He characterizes the consecration ceremony as a difficult period (Kalyug) for Dalits and tribal communities. In a statement, Udit Raj expressed, “After January 22, a challenging era (Kalyug) will begin for Dalits, tribals, and backward communities.”

Udit Raj has a history of making controversial remarks regarding the ‘Pran Pratishtha.’ On the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the INDI leader made a startling statement, asserting, “Manuvad is returning after 500 years.”

In response to this statement, BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi criticized Udit Raj, suggesting that such remarks reveal the Congress party’s involvement in promoting a “Nafrat ki Dukaan” (store of hatred). Tripathi went on to claim that the Congress party is not pleased with the construction of the Ram Temple and is resorting to religious appeasement as a result.

Adding to the criticism, the BJP leader emphasized that the Congress’s comments, particularly those made by Udit Raj, could have consequences in the forthcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He suggested that the Congress party is failing to grasp the sentiments of the nation and its people.

In response to the backlash, Udit Raj clarified his initial statement, stating that he is not opposing the construction of the Ram Temple. He emphasized that his tweet should not be interpreted in connection with the Mandir, seeking to distance his remarks from any opposition to the Ram Temple.

The Congress leader and former Delhi MP expressed support for Udhayanidhi Stalin, the son of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. According to the Congress leader, Udhayanidhi Stalin’s statements align with the “established belief of the Dravidian movement, which stems from the Self-Respect Movement of E. Ramaswamy Periyar.” This indicates that the Congress leader sees Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remarks as in line with the principles and ideals of the Dravidian movement, particularly those associated with the Self-Respect Movement led by E. Ramaswamy Periyar.

Udit Raj is the second Dalit leader in the Congress party to publicly express support for Udhayanidhi Stalin, following Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge, who had done so earlier. This indicates a trend within the Congress party, where Dalit leaders are aligning themselves with Udhayanidhi Stalin and endorsing his views or actions.
