NDRF called off rescue operation

Mumbai: A total of 27 bodies recovered so far and nearly 78 are feared missing due to a massive landslide that struck in the Raigad district of Maharashtra on Wednesday. However, after four days, the district administration called off the rescue operation on Sunday.

According to media reports, the decision has been taken after a meeting between the rescue officials, the state government and the villagers. According to officials, the last body was recovered on Saturday. It was badly decomposed. As per district administration, the dead bodies and animals are now decomposing, due to which a foul smell is spreading in the entire area.

A landslide occurred in Irshalwadi, a village situated on the top of the mountain, on Wednesday. As of Sunday, the death toll due to landslide has risen to 27, as per official figures, while 78 people are still missing.

The official said that a special camp would be set up to issue various certificates and documents, including Aadhaar cards, to the villagers who lost their essential documents in the landslide. For the rehabilitation of the people who lost their houses in the landslide, the state government said that it would provide houses to all the people.
