Professor Akoijam Bimol Angomcha, from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), has entered politics as the Congress candidate for the Inner Manipur constituency. The constituency, which will vote on April 19 in one phase, sees Dr. Akoijam transitioning into politics after dedicating a lifetime to teaching.

1. At 57 years old, Dr. Akoijam holds MA and PhD degrees in psychology and currently teaches at JNU’s School of Social Sciences. He previously taught at Delhi University and the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies.
2. Dr. Akoijam has actively participated in public issues and democratic movements for years. He raised concerns about ethnic tensions in Manipur well before violence erupted between the Kuki-Zo tribes and the Meiteis in May 2023.
3. He enjoys significant support from young and first-time voters in the Inner Manipur constituency, with the Congress party also targeting older voters by portraying him as a vocal advocate for their concerns.
4. As one of the few Manipuri academics frequently featured in the media discussing rights and governance issues, Dr. Akoijam’s supporters believe he could be the first MP from Inner Manipur to effectively represent the state’s interests nationally.
5. Aside from academia and politics, Dr. Akoijam has a passion for cinema. He incorporates film into his courses at JNU, serves on film festival juries, and has produced both a documentary (“Lang-Goi Challabee” – Paradise Under Siege) in 2004 and a feature film (“Karigee Kirunee Nungsiradee” – Why Be Afraid, If You Love) in 2014.
