Worldwide there are numerous dance forms, that are practiced, from traditional to western, which are divided into subcategories. To say that dancing is an interpretive art form is not an exaggeration. The artists can enthrall the audience’s head and soul through their carefully constructed and exquisitely graceful dance routines. If dancing is regarded as a universally adored language, belly dancing transports viewers to a much richer realm of wonder and feeling. One such Indian belly dancer who is making our country proud internationally is Sonia Shil. She has been practicing belly dancing for many years and has performed on various big platforms.

One art form that doesn’t receive the recognition and honors it deserves is belly dancing. Artist Sonia Shil has been repping India abroad and is on a mission to make India and Indians proud and respectfully look up to belly dancing. She has performed in Bhutan, Kazakhstan, Abidjan, China, Australia, Abidjan, and many more countries. She took up the top honor in the 2017 Prague-based Mediterranean Delight Belly Dance Festival, and even in Spain, she represented India.
Starting her journey in 2014, she faced a lot of ups and downs but was able to overcome it strongly. Speaking of all the challenges that she has faced till now, she says, “Between legitimate belly dancers who received their training from a variety of tutors and others who are reel or TikTok belly dancers with no formal training, there exist challenges in the profession. Despite not belly dancing, their videos have gone popular because viewers mistakenly believe that they are. Something about the art form is missing!”

“With all my years of training, for sure, I am gonna keep my country proud and emerge as the top belly dancer in the world. I am looking forward to participating in more and more competitions and making myself and everyone proud of me,” she further added.
This exceptional belly dancer received her training from a variety of instructors, including Tommy King, Oscar Flores, Sadie Marquardt, and Kami Liddle. She currently works as a dancer and performer full-time and runs the Khal Belly belly dancing school in Kolkata. Even in the Bengali television programme Senapati, she danced a belly dancing routine. She has a long way to go in the dancing industry with her incredible talent.
