Sholay actor was in jail for Two years

According to Reddif.com, during one of his interviews, A.K. Hangal revealed, “Following the Partition, I stayed in Pakistan, but authorities arrested me due to my communist beliefs. I endured two years of imprisonment, enduring regular beatings for resisting substandard conditions. Eventually, Senior Muslim members of my party persuaded me to leave Pakistan and relocate to India, despite my strong attachment to my birthplace and its culture. They urged me to continue my political activities in India, considering that I was the only Hindu among them. I had only 12 hours to leave Pakistan.”

Reportedly, Bal Thackeray, the leader of Shiv Sena, frowned upon A.K. Hangal’s participation in Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations, leading the party to ban the actor’s films. Despite this setback, A.K. Hangal continued to contribute to Hindi cinema, featuring in numerous films. His illustrious career spanned 225 films, and he was recognized for his achievements when he was conferred with the Padma Bhushan by the Indian government in 2006. Notably, on February 8, 2011, despite his physical challenges, Hangal made a memorable appearance on the runway in a wheelchair, showcasing fashion designer Riyaz Ganji’s Summer Line in Mumbai.
