UN co-ordinator for Afghanistan urges Taliban to reverse order banning women working for NGOs

Kabul: Acting head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Ramiz Alakbarov urged the Taliban-led Afghanistan government to reverse their decision to prohibit women from working in non-governmental organizations, the mission said on Monday.

Alakbarov met with Afghan Economy Minister Mohammad Hanif on Monday in Kabul to discuss the issue.

“Acting UNAMA head @RamizAlakbarov met Taliban Economy Minister Mohammad Hanif today in Kabul, calling for reversal of decision to ban women from NGO & INGO humanitarian work,” the mission wrote on Twitter.

“Millions of Afghans need humanitarian assistance and removing barriers is vital,” it added.

On Saturday, the Afghan government ordered all local and foreign non-governmental organisations (NGO) to stop female employees from coming to work.

According to an economy ministry letter, the female employees were not allowed to work until further notice because some had not adhered to the administration’s interpretation of Islamic dresscode for women.

Last week, the Afghan Education Ministry within the Taliban government also ordered the suspension of women’ education in private and public higher education institutions.

The ban prompted strong global condemnation and sparking some protests and heavy criticism inside Afghanistan.
