Canada’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has informed the Indian High Commission about the arrest of four Indian nationals in connection with last year’s investigation into the killing of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The IHIT informed that it is up to the arrested men to decide if they want to speak to Indian authorities. An investigating official stated that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police routinely notify the embassy when their citizens are arrested. In response to a questionnaire from The Indian Express, David Lee from IHIT’s media relations team confirmed, “IHIT has informed the embassy of the arrests, but it is up to the four individuals to decide if they want to speak to the consulate.”

Canadian Police Makes Arrest On Nijjar Case

On May 3, IHIT arrested 22-year-olds Karan Brar and Kamalpreet Singh, along with 28-year-old Karanpreet Singh, all residents of Edmonton. According to an IHIT statement, authorities have charged them with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Ten days later, a fourth Indian national, 22-year-old Amandeep Singh, was also arrested for his alleged involvement in Nijjar’s killing. Singh, already in custody for unrelated firearms charges from Peel Regional Police, was charged with similar offenses.

On Tuesday, three of the four individuals made their first in-person appearance in a Canadian court. The judge ordered them to avoid contact with several people in the community.
