On Monday, Donald Trump will make history by becoming the first former US president to face criminal prosecution, marking a significant moment for the country. This event comes as he campaigns to secure the Republican nomination and potentially reclaim the presidency.

The 77-year-old, who has been embroiled in various scandals, is facing accusations of falsifying business records. These allegations stem from a purported scheme aimed at concealing an alleged sexual encounter with adult film actress Stormy Daniels. The alleged motive behind this scheme was to protect his 2016 election campaign from negative publicity.

The “hush money affair” is just one of four criminal cases looming over Trump, and some legal analysts consider it to be the least severe among them. The genuine possibility of Trump being convicted of a felony, and the potential for him to face imprisonment, introduces an unprecedented element of uncertainty into an already unpredictable election.

The right-wing populist is campaigning on promises of “vengeance” against Democratic President Joe Biden, whom he lost to in the 2020 election.

Trump has stated his intention to testify in the case, which is set to begin at 1:30 PM GMT, a move that is both unusual and often considered risky for defendants.

At a rally on Saturday in the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania, Trump addressed his supporters, declaring, “I’ve been indicted more than Al Capone, the great gangster,” which garnered cheers from the crowd. Despite the charges, he vehemently denied any wrongdoing, stating, “There is absolutely nothing here. There is no misdemeanor, there is no felony, there’s no federal crime.”

However, before Trump takes the stand, the trial will commence on Monday with what is expected to be a lengthy and contentious process to select 12 jurors and their alternates.
