In a significant boost for New Zealand Cricket, the team’s captain, Kane Williamson, has been confirmed as part of the 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. This announcement comes after Williamson suffered a knee injury while playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) back in March.

His recovery progress has been steady, allowing him to secure his spot in the squad for the upcoming tournament, which is scheduled to kick off in October.

New Zealand Cricket issued an official statement regarding Williamson’s inclusion, emphasizing that while his selection is a positive development, it doesn’t guarantee his availability for the tournament’s opening match.

Gary Stead, the coach of the Kiwi team, commended Williamson’s unwavering dedication to his rehabilitation and praised the team of experts who have been assisting him throughout this process. Stead also emphasized the need to be cautious and not rush Williamson’s return, as they value his long-term contribution to New Zealand cricket.

Stead clarified that there isn’t a specific timeline for Williamson’s return to active play. He reiterated their commitment to affording him the necessary time for a full recovery, emphasizing the extended duration of the ICC Cricket World Cup and their intent to monitor his progress closely over the next month leading up to the tournament’s first match.

While his selection is undoubtedly a positive sign, Williamson acknowledged that there is still work to be done before he can rejoin his team on the field.
