Women’s T20 World Cup: Beth Mooney’s 74 helps Australia lift sixth WC title

New Delhi: With 19 runs victory over the hosts South Africa at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town, Australia continued their World Cup juggernaut as they lifted the trophy for a record sixth time on Sunday.

After winning the toss Aussie captain Meg Lanning decided to bat first, opener Beth Mooney’s 74-run knock proved to be pivotal as Australia set the target of 157 for the Proteas.

Australia then restricted South Africa to 137 for six wickets, and then Australia shattered the dream of the host to lift their maiden World Cup title dream. Australia’s previous victories came in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018 and 2020.

For South Africa, opener Laura Wolvaardt kept the scoreboard running but her 61 off 48 balls went in vain.

It was an emotional atmosphere at the Newlands as the home crowd embraced the opportunity to support their national team in a first-ever senior World Cup final.

Shabnim Ismail rewrites history

Shabnim Ismail, who dismissed Elysse Perry and Georgia Wareham in the final over of her spell, gave away just 26 runs, including a maiden over. She wrote her name in the history book as she finished as the highest leading wicket-taker in the history of the World Cup.

Australia looked for a big finish, and ten runs off the first two balls of the final over put them in a great position. But Ismail responded well, removing Ellyse Perry (7) and Georgia Wareham (0) off consecutive balls as the target was set at 157 to win.
