New Delhi: The UEFA Champions League’s first matchday is over after eight matches on Wednesday. The contests brought 26 goals, some shocking results, and much more. Groups A, B, C, and D played to acquire 3 points for qualifying.
Here are the results of the last 8 matches of day 1:
Ajax 4-0 Rangers
Ajax were all over Rangers at the Johan Cruyff Arena as the two sides meet in their first group stage fixture of this season’s competition. Many had doubted how well Ajax would do after the departure of Erik ten Hag to Manchester United. Their task in the Netherlands became trickier when Lisandro Martinez and Antony left for Old Trafford.
Eintracht Frankfurt 0-3 Sporting
Sporting have beaten the Europa league champions in their first group stage fixture of this season’s competition. After the match Sporting coach Rúben Amorim said, “In the first half we made some mistakes at the back but we managed to avoid conceding in one of them Adán saved us. When we stabilized more, we did what we trained. The goals created anxiety for Eintracht, we took advantage of them. It’s a victory that seems fair to me.”
Bayern Munich 2-0 Inter Milan
An excellent performance from Leroy Sane led Bayern Munich to a 2-0 Champions League win at Inter Milan in their first group game on Wednesday. Sane scored a first-half opener while Inter defender Danilo D’Ambrosio scored an own goal in the second half.
Barcelona 5-1 Viktoria Plzen
Barcelona are off and running in the 2022-23 Champions League and are top of Group C thanks to a dominant 5-1 win over Viktoria Plzen at the Spotify Camp Nou in the group stage opener on Wednesday night. Robert Lewandowski is ready for next week’s meeting with former club Bayern Munich by scoring a hat-trick in Barcelona’s crushing Champions League win.
Liverpool 1-4 Napoli
Liverpool have been way below their best so far this season but hit a new low in Naples on Wednesday night, as they kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 4-1 defeat to Napoli. The Reds were a goal down inside six minutes. Three down at half-time. Four down after 47 minutes. They were gifting chances to the Italians to score even more, the defensive line is a mess, players are appearing to struggle to track runners from midfield, and the spaces from front to back and touchline to touchline are just too large.
Atletico Madrid 2-1 Porto
A goal in the 101st minute by Antoine Griezmann earned Atletico Madrid a 2-1 home win over 10-man Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday after a frantic end to the match with all the goals coming in added time. Atletico, who were without a victory in their last eight home fixtures in European competition, are level on three points in Group B with Club Brugge who beat Bayer Leverkusen 1-0.
Tottenham 2-0 Marseille
Richarlison scored two late headed goals to help Tottenham win against 10-man Marseille as Champions League football returned in north London after 2 years.
Club Brugge 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen
Abakar Sylla scored the only goal just before half-time as hosts Club Brugge beat Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday. The 19-year-old scored in the 42nd minute when his flicked header from a corner to the near post was caught by Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky, but he fell back over the line with ball in hand to give the Belgian champions a winning start to their Group B campaign.
