Records are meant to be broken and Match 8 of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) was a prime example of that as fans enjoyed a high-scoring thriller in Hyderabad. SunRisers Hyderabad registered an impressive victory at home, beating the Mumbai Indians by 31 runs on March 27.

Records Galore
The game saw back-to-back batting records being registered in the history books courtesy of a high-flying SRH batting lineup which ran riot on the Mumbai bowlers. It was raining sixes at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad with the total number going to 38 sixes on the night. This is the most number of sixes in a T20 game anywhere in the world.
Put to bat first, SRH batters lost their opener Mayank Agarwal cheaply on just 11 runs. However, Mayank’s dismissal didn’t feel like a loss as all hell broke loose after opener Travis Head (62) and Abhishek Sharma (63) left the MI bowlers gasping for air. With both batters batting at a strike rate of over 250, SRH saw themselves at 113/2 within 8 overs after which Travis Head had to depart.
Abhishek Breaks Head’s Record
While Head broke the record for the fastest fifty by an SRH batter (18 balls), Abhishek went on to better that and completed his fifty in just 16 deliveries.
With Abhishek being sent back to the pavilion in the 11th over, the responsibility to extend the already mammoth score came on Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen.
Klaasen’s blistering knock of 80*runs supported by a gritty 42* by Markram saw Hyderabad break RCB’s 11-year record to register the highest-ever IPL team total of 277/3.

Chasing a humongous total, former MI skipper Rohit Sharma (26) and his opening partner Ishan Kishan (34) started on the right note but lost their wickets within the powerplay. With MI sitting at a decent score of 66/2 in 4.3 overs, Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir took the initiative and started piling runs on the board at a good rate.
Tilak Varma’s quickfire 64 raised Mumbai’s hopes but wasn’t enough for the 5-time winners to take the win away from the SunRisers. Pat Cummins and Co. bagged their first win of IPL 2024 on a night that will forever be remembered in IPL history.
