Match 7 of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) witnessed MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings securing their second victory of the season in front of their home supporters. CSK emerged triumphant over Gujarat Giants by a margin of 63 runs at the Chepauk Stadium on March 26th.

CSK delivered an all-round performance, with their batters shining in the first innings, propelling them to a total of 206 for 6. They followed it up with a strong bowling effort, limiting the opposition to 143 for 8. This victory propelled them to the top of the IPL 2024 points table, accumulating four points from two matches.

Gaikwad narrowly missed out on reaching his first fifty of the season, getting dismissed by Spencer Johnson in the 13th over after scoring a brisk 46 off 36 balls. Following Gaikwad’s departure, Shivam Dube took charge and launched an assault on GT’s spinners, dominating the proceedings with his aggressive batting display.

Shivam Dube continued his stellar form in the IPL, notching up his seventh IPL half-century while building a strong partnership of 57 runs with New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell. He reached the milestone in just 22 balls before falling victim to Rashid Khan on the very next delivery. Dube’s innings came to an end after a blistering display, scoring 51 runs off 23 balls, which included two boundaries and five sixes. This impressive knock propelled him into the top three run-scorers of IPL 2024, tallying 85 runs in the first two matches. Currently, he’s only behind Punjab’s Sam Curran (86 runs) and Bengaluru’s Virat Kohli (96 runs) in the race for the Orange Cap. This was the first encounter between these two teams since the finale of 2023 edition.

In the second innings, Gill and wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha made an explosive start to GT’s 207-run chase. However, their momentum was halted when Deepak Chahar dismissed Gill LBW. Chahar struck again in his next over, sending Saha back to the pavilion, leaving GT struggling at 34 for 2.

After the powerplay, Mitchell joined the bowling attack and removed Vijay Shankar, who has been struggling to find his form from previous seasons. Despite the setbacks, David Miller and B Sai Sudharsan managed to stabilize GT’s innings with a gritty 41-run partnership. However, CSK’s fielding brilliance, notably a superb effort by Rahane, led to Miller’s dismissal. CSK pacer Tushar Deshpande then claimed his 100th T20 wicket by dismissing Miller.
