As the auction kicked off, the Knight Riders initiated the bidding, swiftly followed by RR. The battle escalated rapidly, with the two franchises aggressively vying for Powell’s services. When the bidding reached Rs 7.4 crore, the Knight Riders withdrew, allowing the Royals to clinch the deal for the Caribbean all-rounder.

The Royals, starting with a purse of Rs 14.5 crore, expended half of their budget in the pursuit of Powell. On the other hand, the Knight Riders, who had acquired Powell for Rs 20 lakh back in 2017, began this auction with Rs 32.7 crore in their kitty.

Powell’s IPL History
Previously picked up by Delhi Capitals in 2022 for Rs 2.8 crore, Powell had a noteworthy season, featuring in 14 matches and scoring 250 runs with a strike rate of 149.70. However, his appearances dwindled in the following year, participating in only three games and tallying 7 runs along with a wicket. Consequently, he was released by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2024 auctions.
