Mahavir Jayanti 2023: Mahavir Jayanti, one of the most significant and anticipated festivals in the Jain community, is celebrated yearly to remember Lord Mahavir, the final and 24th Tirthankara of the Jain religion. On the Hindu calendar, it is observed on the thirteenth day of the Chaitra month, which falls in March or April. Over the world, Jains enthusiastically and fervently observe the event. Mahavir Jayanti will be observed on April 4, 2023, this year.

Mahavir Jayanti 2023: Basic Principles

Mahavira asserted that the following guidelines should be followed to lead a good life:

  • Ahimsa (Nonviolence), is the practice of not harming living things
  • Satya (truthfulness); speaking the truth
  • Asteya (Non-stealing) is the practice of not taking what is not yours
  • Brahmacharya (Chastity): refraining from sensual gratification
  • Aparigraha (Non-attachment) avoiding being emotionally connected to objects of material value

His teachings, sometimes referred to as “Jain Agamas,” are the cornerstones of Jainism.

Mahavir Jayanti 2023: Do’s and Dont’s 

Dos’s 

  • A crucial component of Mahavir Jayanti is fasting. To demonstrate their devotion and ask for Lord Mahavir’s blessings, devotees refrain from eating and drinking.
  • To commemorate the teachings of Lord Mahavir, participate in prayer gatherings, perform puja, and recite Jain scriptures.
  • Help those in need by contributing to Jain temples, charities, and organisations.
  • Adhere to Lord Mahavir’s teachings and demonstrate nonviolence in all of your words and deeds.
  • Utilize this opportunity to spread the word of unity, love, and peace across all communities.

Don’t’s 

  • During the Mahavir Jayanti holiday, Jainism forbids the consumption of non-vegetarian foods including meat, fish, and eggs.
  • To avoid harming your body and soul during the event, stay away from alcohol and cigarette products.
  • Jainism forbids the wearing of leather since it necessitates the death of animals.
  • Since Jainism upholds the principle of non-violence, it’s crucial to refrain from any aggressiveness or violence throughout the festival.
  • During the festival, devotees are urged to refrain from worldly pleasures and devote themselves to spiritual pursuits.
