Flavourful Sticky Rice Dumpling Recipe

Tasty, satisfying and filling sticky rice dumpling recipe originated from China and NE India

It is a traditional Chinese food made during the Duanwu festival (Dragon Boat Festival). The same recipe is also made in many Northeastern states of India on many occasions and festivals with their own methods and flavours. This recipe will resonate with the outcome of both regions, rooted in the simplicity of procedure and method.

It is a filling dish that goes well with many sweet or spicy chutneys and also with meat curry. It can be made by incorporating different dry fruits. One tasting it for the first time won’t be disappointed.

Ingredients

  1. Glutinous rice (Sticky Rice)
  2. Half bowl chye poh
  3. Half bowl mushrooms
  4. M. floridulus or bamboo leaves
  5. Cooking strings
  6. Dry fruits

Step-By-Step Guide

1.Soak glutinous rice and mushrooms in warm water for about 4 hours.

2. Stir fry mushrooms and chye poh with your preferred seasoning, and keep aside.

3. Sear and season rice and dry fruits in a pan, and let rest for a while.

4. Use bamboo leaves to wrap rice and other ingredients with cooking strips forming a cone or a square.

5. Add the wrapped zongzi in hot boiling water for about an hour.

6. Alternatively, boil zongzi for 2-3 hours until rice holds together, then cool for 24 hours before eating.

  1. The dumplings can be made of meat stuffing as well.
  2. Different types of dry fruits can be used.
