New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear the Gyanvapi mosque matter, pertaining to keeping the ‘shivling’ area secured, on Friday.

A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud on Thursday took note of the submissions of advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, appearing for some Hindu devotees, and said the order granting protection was expiring on November 12, according to the news agency PTI.

“We will constitute a bench at 3 pm tomorrow,” the CJI said.

On May 17, the top court passed an interim order directing protection of the area inside Gyanvapi premises at Varanasi, where the purported ‘Shivling’ was discovered.

The structure was found during a survey earlier in May ordered by a Varanasi court.

The apex court, on May 17, had directed the Varanasi district magistrate to ensure protection of the area inside the Gyanvapi-Shringar Gauri complex, where the “Shivling” is said to be found, and allowed Muslims to offer namaz.

The case pertains to a plea filed by five women, who demanded that they be allowed to offer daily prayers and observe other Hindu rituals at the site.
