Wrestlers' Protest

New Delhi: The Sports Ministry on Monday banned the election of the wrestling association amid wrestlers, led by Bajrang Punia, are sitting on strike against Wrestling Federation of India President and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The elections were to be held on May 7 next month.

The Ministry has directed the wrestling federation to form an ad-hoc committee, which will conduct the executive committee elections within 45 days of its formation and manage day-to-day affairs. Management includes the selection of athletes, submission of applications for international championships, etc.

Wrestling association president accused of physical abuse.

Seven top wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, have moved to Supreme Court to file a case against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The wrestlers alleged that they filed a sexual harassment complaint against him at the Connaught Place police station in central Delhi. But the case has not been registered yet.

The wrestlers said that people have started considering them liars. We were forced to come back defeated. Our protest will continue till we get justice.

On Sunday, the top wrestlers returned to Jantar Mantar to resume their protest against the BJP MP who has been charged with sexual harassment of many female athletes. Top wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malikkh have claimed the support of many such victims who faced sexual assault.

Over 3 months have passed and wrestlers alleged that they received threats from many sides. The top wrestlers accused that they had submitted their complaints at the police station but still, no FIR was filed.

Delhi Police Initiates Probe 

On Monday, the Delhi Police launched a probe in the matter and also sought a report from the committee constituted by the Sports Ministry. Earlier, the Ministry formed a committee to look into the charges levelled against the BJP MP.

Allegations 

The case pertains to sexual harassment allegations against the WFI chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh. Apart from that, the wrestlers have alleged that “WFI knows nothing about Wrestling” and all athletes have to struggle for basic help and facilities.
