Sonam Wangchuk on fast: Sonam Wangchuk’s five-day climate fast has entered to the third day on Saturday. Earlier, it has already been informed that Sonam Wangchuk, an engineer turned education reformer and social activist is sitting on five-day climate fast from January 26 for the protection of ladakh.
In minus 20 degrees this is my third day of the fast out in the HIAL campus rooftop, partly because Khardungla Pass was blocked due to heavy snowfall and partly because the administration has restricted my fast to HIAL campus and not allowed for Khardungla Pass citing threats to my life and so on…” said Wangchuk, adding, “I think there is more to it than that because the base of Khardungla has all basic facility of security and health and I should be allowed to go to that place.” He requested the administration.
Sonam Wangchuk further added that he is not scare of arrest but administration pressurised him to sign the documents. He called the lawyers of the world for right step and advice.

He is on five-day climate fast from January 26 at the Himalayan Institute of Alternative Ladakh (HIAL). He planned to start his 5-day fast at Khardungla post but due to heavy snowfall and road blockage he has begun his fast at HIAL on Rupublic day to attract the attention of administration towards the eco-fragile regions of Ladakh.
However, he later informed the world through his tweet that he is under house arrest and that the UT administration has restricted his fast to the HAIL campus and that he is not permitted to climb Khardung La, citing threats to his life and so on.
Mr. Wangchuk has been actively speaking about the climate threads in Ladakh. He said, “Ladakh has 90 percent Tribal Population and there is a possibility to declare it as a Scheduled area”. Watch the video to know more!#SonamWangchuk #sonamwangchukonclimate #Sonamwangchukhousearrest.
Wangchuk is on the fast in order to save environment. Recently, the studies indicate that nearly two-thirds of the Union Territory’s glaciers are on the verge of extinction. Sonam Wangchuk emphasised that if the carelessness continues and Ladakh is not protected from industries, the glaciers here will become extinct, causing enormous problems due to water scarcity in India and its neighbours.
Wangchuk expressed concern about the possibility of corporate expansion in the union territory, which is expected to exacerbate the severe resource scarcity, such as water. Glaciers may melt as a result of mining and other similar activities, he said.
