Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma surprised many by unexpectedly declaring his candidacy for the upcoming legislative assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh. He announced his intention to run from the Pithapuram constituency in the state.

He to X and wrote “Sudden decision. Am happy to inform that I am contesting from Pithapuram”.

Shortly after the Telugu Desam Party-Bharatiya Janata Party-Jana Sena Party (JSP) alliance announced their decision to field Tollywood actor and JSP chief Pawan Kalyan from the Pithapuram seat, filmmaker RGV made the announcement. Varma stated his intention to contest in the 2024 assembly elections from the same constituency in Andhra Pradesh.

After Ram Gopal Varma released his film ‘Vyooham,’ which focuses on Andhra Pradesh politics, many local leaders demanded he be kicked out of the state due to the controversy. The movie centers on the death of former Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy and stars Manasa Radhakrishnan, Ajmal Ameer, and Surabhi Prabhavathi.

Previously, he had strongly criticized TDP supremo Nara Chandrababu Naidu, TDP leader Nara Lokesh, and actor-politician Pawan Kalyan. This came in response to an alleged protest staged outside his office in Hyderabad concerning his political thriller ‘Vyooham.’
