New Delhi: The Surat District Court on Thursday convicted Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case filed against him over his alleged ‘Modi surname’ remark. He has been sentenced of two years of imprisonment.

However, Gandhi was granted bail by the court later and the order was stayed so that the Congress MP can appeal in the High Court.

Modi surname defamation case

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi had filed the case against Gandhi for making remarks at a Lok Sabha polls rally in Karnataka on April 13, 2019.

“Why all the thieves, be it Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi or Narendra Modi, have Modi in their names,” Gandhi allegedly said during the rally.
