New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday took a jibe at the Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that while Manipur is burning for months, people are being killed, rapes are happening in the state but the PM was laughing, cracking jokes in Parliament.

Addressing the media, Gandhi said, “During his address in Parliament yesterday, the PM spoke for approximately two hours and 13 minutes. Towards the conclusion of his speech, he dedicated merely two minutes to address the situation in Manipur. Despite the ongoing turmoil in Manipur, marked by violence, loss of lives, and instances of sexual assault, the Prime Minister’s demeanor appeared light-hearted as he resorted to jokes and laughter. It doesn’t behove him…”

“In my 19 years of experience, I have witnessed and heard things in Manipur that have left a lasting impact on me. During my speech in Parliament, I openly stated, ‘The Prime Minister and the Home Minister have committed matricide, they have destroyed India in Manipur.’ These words are not without substance…During our visit to the Meitei region in Manipur, we were explicitly informed that any Kuki member within our security detail should not be brought here, as they would be killed on sight,” Congress MP said.

“Similarly, when we visited the Kuki area, we were cautioned that any Meitei person brought there would be shot down. Thus, it’s not just one state; it’s a tale of two states. The assassination of a state has occurred, and it has been torn apart,” Gandhi stated.

“The PM could have chosen to visit Manipur, engage with the communities, and express that he is their PM, initiating dialogue. However, I do not perceive any intention in that direction. The concern goes beyond whether PM Modi will secure the position of Prime Minister in 2024; the real concern is the distressing situation in Manipur, where innocent children and people are losing their lives,” Congress MP added.
