Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, shared information regarding toll collection and revealed that the government is planning to abolish tolls soon. Instead, a new system will be implemented. This information was shared by the Central Minister on the X platform (formerly known as Twitter).

The new toll collection system will be satellite-based and is expected to commence soon, although no deadline has been announced yet. Under this system, users will be charged toll tax based on the distance they travel on the highway. This toll tax will be automatically deducted from their bank accounts. This system will also provide users with an opportunity for savings.

In early December, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari stated that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) aims to introduce the new system by March 2024. This system is intended to reduce the time spent at toll plazas.

Currently, the FASTag system is in place for toll payments. It is an electronic toll collection system that automatically pays toll taxes at toll plazas. With the help of this system, the waiting time at toll plazas has reduced to an average of 47 seconds, compared to the previous average of 714 seconds.

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system that utilizes Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to facilitate automatic toll payments at toll plazas. It is affixed onto the windshield of a vehicle or other applicable locations, allowing for seamless and convenient toll transactions.
