A 22-year-old woman named Nandini Tewari, who had been rendered unconscious and placed on a ventilator due to a road accident, gave birth to a healthy baby boy at the AIIMS trauma center last week. The successful outcome was a result of effective coordination among a team of multidisciplinary doctors. While Nandini Tewari has been removed from the ventilator, she remains in the ICU and is expected to be discharged soon.

Tewari was admitted to the AIIMS trauma center on October 17 in an unconscious state with severe head injuries. A CT scan revealed a thin blood clot and swelling on the left side of her brain. She was intubated and placed on ventilator support. At the time of the accident, Tewari was 39 weeks and five days pregnant after falling from an e-rickshaw on her way to a medical checkup. Once she was stabilized, the gynecology department recommended childbirth.

Professor Deepak Gupta from the neurosurgery department explained that on October 18, Tewari went into labor. An elective caesarean section was performed, and she gave birth to a healthy baby, with the surgery carried out by the obstetrics and gynecology team. The newborn was promptly transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for observation.

Dr. Gupta mentioned, “The patient remained on ventilator support for six days. She is still in the ICU, receiving high-flow nasal cannula support, and remains conscious. She is expected to be discharged within a week. Her condition is under close observation.”

In a similar case, Shafiya, a 27-year-old from Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, experienced severe head injuries in March last year when she fell from a two-wheeler while pregnant. She underwent a life-saving surgery the same night and had four additional operations over the past year. AIIMS doctors reported that she required multiple CT scans during her pregnancy.

At 36 weeks into her pregnancy, she delivered a healthy girl at AIIMS Delhi in October of the same year. Recently, she was readmitted due to seizures. While her life was saved, she is unable to walk independently and relies on others for support.

Dr. Gupta emphasized that saving a pregnant woman with severe head injuries, as well as the unborn child, demands intensive monitoring and a multidisciplinary team-based approach. The primary focus is on stabilizing the mother to ensure the best outcome for the fetus.
