A 43-year-old man from Palghar district in Maharashtra is alleged to have murdered his live-in partner in response to her rape complaint, said the police on Tuesday. The incident occurred between August 9 and 12, and the body of the 28-year-old victim remains undiscovered.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police, Vasai, Padmaja Bade, the accused residing in Vasai, Palghar, was apprehended on Tuesday. The victim’s family initiated a missing person’s report with the Naigaon police on August 14, suspecting that the accused had disposed of the body in the neighbouring town of Vapi, Gujarat.
A preliminary investigation suggests that the accused’s anger stemmed from the victim’s rape complaint, which had resulted in the registration of a criminal case against him. Reportedly, the woman had declined to retract her complaint, leading to the alleged murder.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s sister, the Naigaon police registered an FIR against the accused on Monday under Indian Penal Code Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of an offence).
Additionally, the accused is facing another case of abetment of suicide in a separate police station within the Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar police limits, although the official did not provide specific details about this case.
