In another instance of student exploitation, students at Maulana Azad government school in Kalaburgi were reportedly compelled to clean school toilets and perform gardening duties at the Principal’s residence. The Principal of Maulana Azad Model English Medium School is accused of engaging in this behavior for the past year. These schools, initiated by the Karnataka government under the Directorate of Minorities, are spread across the state.

A complaint letter was submitted to the Roza police station by the father of a student from the same school, urging a thorough investigation and immediate action against the exploitation of students. According to the complaint, the Principal cited a lack of manpower in the cleaning department as justification. The police have assured that they will investigate the matter and take appropriate action.

This incident is just one among several similar cases that have surfaced in the state of Karnataka over the past few months. In December 2023, the District Block Education Officer submitted a report after a video circulated on social media, allegedly showing children in the home district of Karnataka Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa, Shivamogga, cleaning toilets. There were speculations that the headmaster, Shankarappa, and other educators were involved in making students clean restrooms.

Likewise, in another incident, the headmistress of a government school in Bengaluru was apprehended by the Karnataka Police on December 23. She was accused of compelling students to clean the school’s restrooms. Allegedly, students at Bengaluru North’s Andrahalli Government School were coerced into scrubbing restroom walls and cleaning toilets. Videos capturing this distressing situation circulated widely on social media, prompting authorities to intervene and address the issue.
