On Monday, the Israel Embassy contributed to the #ExploreIndianIslands trend on social media by sharing images of Lakshadweep, highlighting the island’s “enchanting allure.” This participation in the trend occurred in the midst of the ongoing controversy surrounding derogatory remarks made by Maldives ministers against Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his recent visit to Lakshadweep.

Taking to social media, the embassy said, “We were in Lakshadweep last year upon the federal government’s request to initiate the desalination program.”

“Israel is ready to commence working on this project tomorrow,” the embassy said.

Prominent Indian celebrities have joined the discourse on social media, urging people to consider exploring the Indian archipelago as an alternative tourist destination. This advocacy comes in the wake of a controversy that erupted on Saturday when Maldives minister Mariyam Shiuna made derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep.

Mariyam Shiuna, who serves as the Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment in the Maldives, referred to PM Modi as a ‘clown’ and a ‘puppet of Israel’ in posts on X (formerly Twitter). These posts were later deleted after facing backlash on the micro-blogging site. The involvement of Indian celebrities in promoting domestic tourism may be seen as a response to the controversy, encouraging travelers to explore the beauty of Indian islands like Lakshadweep.
