In a tweet announcing the news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed, “Our government is privileged to honor former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh with the Bharat Ratna. This recognition is a tribute to his unparalleled contributions, dedicating his entire life to championing the rights and welfare of farmers.”
“Whether serving as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Home Minister of the country, or an MLA, he consistently propelled the nation’s development. Chaudhary Charan Singh also stood resolute against the Emergency, displaying dedication to our farming community and unwavering commitment to democracy during challenging times,” he added.

Turning to Dr. MS Swaminathan, PM Modi shared, “It brings immense joy that the Government of India is conferring the Bharat Ratna on Dr. MS Swaminathan, acknowledging his monumental contributions to our nation in agriculture and farmers’ welfare. His pivotal role in guiding India towards self-reliance in agriculture and tireless efforts to modernize the sector stand out.”
