BJP Veteran LK Advani, 3rd Deputy Prime Minister To Be Conferred With Bharat Ratna

Lal Krishna Advani, a prominent figure in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) renowned for propelling the party to national prominence through his Rath Yatra advocating for the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya during the early 1990s, has been honored with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. With this he became the third Deputy Prime Minister of India to be conferred with this honour after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Morarji Desai.

“I am delighted to announce that Shri LK Advani Ji will be awarded the Bharat Ratna. I had a conversation with him and extended my congratulations on this well-deserved honor,” expressed PM Narendra Modi in a statement on X.

In the announcement of the honor for the veteran leader, PM Modi emphasized LK Advani’s monumental role in the development of India. Describing him as one of the most respected statesmen in the country, the Prime Minister acknowledged Advani’s significant contributions.

Hailing from Karachi, LK Advani migrated to India following the Partition and established himself in Bombay. At the age of fourteen, in 1941, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Advani became a member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, an organization founded by BJP icon Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The Bharatiya Jana Sangh served as the political precursor to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

LK Advani’s political journey saw him becoming a member of the Rajya Sabha for the first time in 1970, holding that position for four terms until 1989. In 1977, after the Janata Party’s triumph in the general elections, he assumed the role of Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha.

A founding member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Advani served as the party’s president on three occasions. In 1989, he entered the Lok Sabha for the first time. During Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government formation in 1999, Advani took on the roles of Minister of Home Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister.

Recognizing his contributions, LK Advani was honored with the Padma Vibhushan in 2015, India’s second-highest civilian award.
