New Delhi: Ponniyin Selvan, the crowning achievement of Mani Ratnam I, will soon be available in theatres. The movie opens on Friday, September 30. The figures from the week-long advance ticket purchase programme are very encouraging. The movie is on track to surpass Kamal Haasan’s Vikram’s remarkable first-day advance booking total recorded earlier this year as the biggest first-day advance booking for any Tamil film this year. Additionally, practically all performances in numerous southern cities have been scheduled for the whole weekend, demonstrating the enormous interest in the movie.
According to trade sources, the Tamil version of the movie has already sold enough tickets for the first day’s box office to total 10 crore. The film’s overall advance booking sales for the first day were over 11 crore thanks to the Telugu, Hindi, and Malayalam dub versions, which also contributed to advance booking sales of over 1 crore. When Kamal Haasan’s film Vikram debuted in June, advance booking sales on the first day reached 15.30 crore. The movie might reach this number with virtually the entire Thursday still available for PS1.

Ponniyin Selvan’s massive international reception, especially in the US, is what really works in its favour. The movie has already made $835,000 ($6.8 crore) at the US box office and is on track to earn $1 million in total advance bookings from the North American market. Industry insiders claim that Ponniyin Selvan’s total advance bookings worldwide are already approaching $20 million and may perhaps reach $25 million by the day’s end. This essentially indicates that the movie is ready for its big debut, which, based on current projections, may bring in more than $50 million worldwide.
