New Delhi: Argentine actress and former model Silvina Luna died aged 43 after 79 days in hospital due to kidney complications following a failed Brazilian butt lift surgery performed in 2011.

Argentine actress Silvina Luna, 43, died on Thursday 31 August. She was hospitalized for 79 days at Italiano Hospital, where she was treated for complications from her 2011 surgery, Mirror.co.uk reported.

According to local media, her brother, Ezequiel Luna, gave doctors permission to remove her ventilator at midday on Thursday. Silvina’s lawyer, Fernando Burlando, said the tragic loss was “a painful ending”.

He hoped his struggle will keep the authorities “sober, so that society takes notice and no more people die”. The actress underwent this surgery around June or July 2011 and was performed by plastic surgeon Anibal Lotocki.

Dr. Lotocki is accused of the 2021 death of a patient he operated on in 2010. He injected Silvina with a liquid containing polymethyl methacrylate, which is regulated by the Food, Drug, and Technology Administration.

Silvina first needed medical attention in 2015, when she was treated for kidney stones. Doctors diagnosed her with kidney failure and hypercalcemia, and she received weekly dialysis until a kidney transplant.

In 2016, she went to Miami and met with Argentinian doctor Critsitan Perez, who removed the dangerous substance from her butt.

Complications Post Surgery

Speaking to C5N broadcaster, he explained: “Silvina developed a drug-induced autoimmune disease after her surgery. All the patients developed severe kidney failure and eventually died.”

While awaiting a new kidney transplant, Silvina’s condition worsened and she was hospitalized on June 13. She was sedated for nearly two weeks, until June 29, she was removed from the ventilator.

On August 19, the hospital announced that Silvina “has been able to breathe on her own, has been restored to motor, nutritional and psychological functions”. But in recent days, she contracted the bacteria and was intubated again on August 30, before being released from the resuscitation system the next day.

The Buenos Aires attorney general’s office opened an investigation into Silvina’s death and ordered her body to be taken to the city morgue for an autopsy. Her death comes just two weeks after TV presenter and fashion expert Mariano Caprarola died following buttock augmentation surgery in 2010, also performed by Dr Lotocki.

In February 2022, Dr. Lotocki was sentenced to four years in prison for a medical malpractice lawsuit brought by Silvina and three other women. In July, a court banned him from practicing medicine for five years. However, the surgeon is not behind bars. He remains free while the National Criminal Appeals Chamber reviews his sentence.
