New Delhi: A concerning health incident has unfolded in the national capital, Delhi, where approximately 70 children fell ill after consuming a mid-day meal. All affected children have been admitted to separate hospitals for medical attention. Following the incident, the police have initiated an investigation, and the situation is under scrutiny.

Alarming school outbreak

A government school in the Sagarpur area of South-West Delhi is at the center of this unfolding crisis. According to reports, nearly 70 students from classes 6 to 8 complained of stomach ache and vomiting after consuming the mid-day meal on Friday. The students were admitted to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital and the Dadadev Hospital. The condition of all the children is reported to be stable.

Accountability demanded from meal providers

An official from the Delhi government has issued a notice demanding an explanation from the mid-day meal provider. The provider has been given 24 hours to respond. The official stated that strict action will be taken against those found guilty after a thorough investigation.

Soy-based drink led to mishap

Assistant Commissioner of Police (South-West), Manoj Si, revealed that around 70 boys from classes 6 to 8 of Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya in Durga Park complained of stomach pain and vomiting. They were admitted to a nearby hospital. The school administration stated that students were served puri and vegetables for lunch.

However, after consuming a soy-based drink, many complained of stomach pain and vomiting. Subsequently, the distribution of mid-day meals and the soy-based drink was halted. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) mentioned that samples of food and drink have been collected for investigation.

Doctors Share Insights on Children’s Health

A senior doctor from Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital stated that around 50 children were brought to the hospital with severe vomiting, restlessness, and gastric issues. It appears that the children were given a beverage with an expired date, causing their symptoms. Some children lost consciousness and are under close observation. Several children’s conditions are grave due to continuous vomiting. Some students were granted leave until Friday evening, while those with more severe conditions are being closely monitored.

The incident of children falling ill after the mid-day meal in a Delhi school has raised serious concerns about food safety and quality in educational institutions. With a comprehensive investigation underway, it is hoped that swift action will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future, ensuring the safety and well-being of students.
