New Delhi: After the success of UPI (Unified Payments Interface), the Government of India is aiming at another initiative, ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce), an additional digital revolution for the e-commerce space.

The Central Government is looking to complete this initiative as soon as possible, as it will not only be a platform for all the buyers and sellers to come together to engage in a wide range of goods and services but also to put an end to monopolistic environments.

Imagine a place having apps for all kinds of needs in one place like- Amazon, Flipkart, Ola, Uber even Zomato and Swiggy. A consumer will not have to juggle between apps, as the platform will prove to be a time-efficient space.

The Ministry of Commerce is spearheading this initiative which is a first-of-its-kind initiative aiming to democratise digital commerce. One can open a shop for all the amenities one can avail, even if it includes consumers’ local Kirana shop.

“As UPI is to the digital payment domain, ONDC is to e-commerce in India,” the Ministry said in a release.

As per Thampy Koshy, Chief Executive, ONDC said that around 40% of the retail orders originate from Bengaluru, while others arise from cities like Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Kolkata, Meerut and Pune.

The CEO also shared about ONDC operating with 95 farmer-producer organisations with the support of the Small Farmers’ Agri-Business Consortium (SFAC) and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development while more than 400 await in the process of onboarding. Now, the consumer can directly buy pure agricultural products from the sources.
