Usha Vance, the wife of Vice President-elect JD Vance, will step into the spotlight alongside her husband when he is inaugurated on Monday. Usha, soon-to-be Second Lady, will be present at the ceremony in Washington, D.C., alongside their three children. While the role of Second Lady is largely ceremonial, Usha’s support for her husband has been unwavering throughout his political career.
Born Usha Chilukuri in San Diego, California, in 1987, she is the daughter of Hindu Indian immigrants. Her father, an engineer and lecturer at San Diego State University, and her mother, Lakshmi Chilukuri, a provost at UC San Diego, both valued education. Usha’s younger sister is a mechanical engineer, and her aunt works in the medical field in India.
Raised in a household that emphasized the value of education, Usha excelled academically and went on to study law at Yale, where she met JD. She was one of the top students at Yale Law School, later clerking for conservative judges, including U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Before her husband’s political rise, Usha worked as a corporate litigator at Munger, Tolles & Olson, a prestigious law firm. She left her job when JD secured the vice-presidential nomination. The couple has three children: Ewan Blaine, born in 2017; Vivek, born in 2020; and Mirabel Rose, born in 2021.
Usha was a registered Democrat until 2014 and has openly discussed her Hindu upbringing in interviews, noting that while she was not raised Christian, her parents’ values of compassion and integrity profoundly influenced her. Her husband has often referred to her as his “spirit guide,” praising her for her wisdom and guidance. As Second Lady, Usha Vance will likely continue to play a supportive and influential role in her husband’s political journey.
