New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in the US amid discussions on Rupee vs Dollar that the Indian rupee has performed very well. She said the Indian rupee has outperformed the US dollar against many other emerging market currencies.

‘Rupee has outperformed other currencies’

Nirmala Sitharaman, who was in Washington DC on a US visit, said in a media briefing on Saturday that the rupee is not depreciating, we should see it as the dollar is strengthening.

But if you look at other market currencies, the rupee is doing very well against the dollar. The Finance Minister said these things on a question regarding the measures being taken to deal with the fall in the rupee.

Sitharaman talked about inflation and cryptocurrencies 

Sitharaman said currencies of other countries are also performing against the strength of the US dollar while the Indian rupee has outperformed many other emerging market currencies.

Talking about inflation, she said fundamentals are good and forex reserves are good. We are in a comfortable position and therefore I reiterate that inflation is also at a manageable level. We are trying to take it further.

Talking about cryptocurrencies, she said that we want to bring matters related to it to the table of G20 so that the members can discuss it and arrive at a framework or SOP, so that there are technologically driven regulators in countries globally.

Sitharaman mentions impacts of Russia-Ukraine war

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also raised the issue of energy crisis in the midst of the Russia-Ukraine war and said that many countries have had to switch back to coal for energy production as gas cannot be afforded or is not available.

Sitharaman met the World Bank President

On Saturday, Sitharaman met World Bank President David Malpass in Washington. The two leaders discussed various issues including India’s #G20 Presidency, improving the capital adequacy framework of MDBs, addressing debt vulnerabilities and enhancing WBG’s engagement with India through MIGA.

Also met UAE’s MoS for Financial Affairs

He also met Mohamed Al Husseini, UAE Minister of State for Financial Affairs, on the sidelines of the IMF-WB Annual Meeting 2022. The two leaders exchanged views on the upcoming G20 India Presidency, UAE’s CoP28 Chair, climate finance and other areas of mutual interest.
