New Delhi: US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan that exacerbated tensions with Beijing finally came to an end. The trip is being seen as a bid to hold their commitments towards the self-governing island.

Pelosi also became the first American speaker to visit the island in more than 25 years. Beijing’s fury with the trip, sparked a debate that ran for more than a week after word of it emerged. She exhibited composure yet defiance while in Taipei.

“Today the world faces a choice between democracy and autocracy,” she said in a short speech during a meeting with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.

“America’s determination to preserve democracy, here in Taiwan and around the world, remains ironclad,” she said.

China has always claimed Taiwan as its own territory. The Chinese went haywire as soon as Pelosi’s pane touched down Taiwan. They announced series of military exercises around the island nation. They even entered Taiwanese waters.

Meanwhile, Nancy Pelosi met Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in Taipei. She tweeted regarding this meeting. The tweet read,Our delegation had the distinct privilege of meeting with the President of Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen today. We discussed how America & Taiwan can deepen our economic ties, further strengthen our security partnership & defend our shared democratic values.”

The tweet further read, “It was also my high honor to receive from President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan the Order of Propitious Clouds with Special Grand Cordon: a symbol of our treasured friendship. Make no mistake: America remains unwavering in our commitment to the people of Taiwan– now & for decades to come.”

China has warned that it will launch an offensive attack today on Taiwan. While Nancy Pelosi was still on the island nation, China’s navy and air force were in action. The entire world had its eyes fixed on Nancy Pelosi in Taipei. A tweet by Chinese state-affiliated media agency Xinhua, read “The Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) on Wednesday organized actual combat joint exercises and training around the Taiwan island.”

In a new interview a High-level Taiwanese officials say that China’s 4 military exercise areas in the north and south of Taiwan are mainly tasked with carrying out “sea and air blockade operations against Taiwan.”

If Beijing’s warning is real then we are almost 4-5 hours away from the start of Chinese military response to Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.
