New Delhi: The Israeli army said on Sunday that a soldier was shot dead in a nighttime attack on a check post in East Jerusalem. “An IDF soldier was martyred due to grievous injuries sustained in the firing at Shuafat post,” the army said in a statement.
The army said in its statement, “The soldier was taken to the hospital for advanced medical treatment, where he was declared brought dead. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family.” According to a border police spokesman, “A suspect approached the Shuafat crossing and opened fire on the security forces, in addition to a bullet fired from a passing vehicle. Border guarding forces are searching for the suspects.”

Shooting occured in a quite outpost area
Israeli emergency services said a man was transferred to hospital in critical condition, and another woman was treated at the scene, whose condition is under control. The shooting took place at an outpost in a normally quiet area near the Shuafat refugee camp in East Jerusalem. Here an area considered by most of the international community to be occupied.

In a statement, Prime Minister Yair Lapid called the situation “serious” and said “multiple forces are deployed in the field and work day and night to protect the citizens of Israel. Tonight our hearts are with the victims and their families. Terror will not defeat us, we are strong, even in this difficult evening.”
Palestinian officials said the attack follows two days of violent attacks in the occupied West Bank, where four Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces, CNN reported.
