New Delhi: Eric Garcetti, a former mayor of Los Angeles, has been appointed as the new United States (US) ambassador to India. The Upper House of the US Parliament gave consent to his name.
The post of US Ambassador to India remained vacant for the past two years. This is the first time that the post of Ambassador to India lay vacant for such a long time.
Kenneth Juster, whose tenure ended in January 2021 was the last US Ambassador to India.
Republican member Young defended the decision to vote in favour of Garcetti, saying that it is in our national security interest to immediately designate an ambassador to India to deal with China throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
He may not have the relevant experience, but he has the skills to discharge this responsibility successfully, He added.

Eric Garcetti is a former mayor of Los Angeles. US President Joe Biden nominated him for the post of ambassador in India in July 2021. But, Garcetti’s nomination failed to be approved in the last two years because some lawmakers opposed his appointment, saying he failed to take action against one of his advisors, Who happened to an accused of sexual harassment.
