New Delhi: An earthquake of measuring 7.1 on the Richter Scale has struck the country of Tonga on Friday. The US Geological Survey has issued a tsunami warning.
Epicenter is at town Neiafu
As per the information given by the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was 10 km (six miles) deep and about 200 km southeast of Neiafu. The town is located in the northeast direction from the Pacific archipelago nation.
Tsunami warnings released
“Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km of the earthquake epicenter,” said the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
Seismic activity is quite intense in terms of occurring. The country is rather a collection of 171 islands with a population of 100,000 people.

Tonga was hit by a massive volcanic eruption earlier
In January this year, it was rocked by the eruption of the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano. It is considered as one of the most powerful such events in modern times, according to researchers from the University of Bath.
